This is Angela (former Diablo Valley School staff),
As an adult with a lot of passions and commitment around the subject of
democratic schooling, I'm intrigued by the interest of other adults to
participate in a democratic school. It seems like there are more and more adults
who would like to get involved but don't quite know how. And while I'm glad to
see it representing a shift in thought on where we could be heading in our
public schools, new Sudbury style schools can ill-afford to have folks come in,
see what it's really like and then leave having made a negative impact on the
school culture in a very short time. (this is a danger that I know some schools
have experienced and are on the watch for) I'm interested in a discussion in
what might be a process around preparing or training adults on the Sudbury
school experience. I know many on this list have a lot of books to recommend
and I would agree that right now it is the best way to become "educated" on the
subject.
I think it might also be valuable to generate a group of willing folks (that
includes the children!) with experience in a democratic school who might
actually come up with an ongoing training program for adults who want and need
this before actually entering a democratic school environment. (this is a
little tongue-in-cheek, written to generate response on what it was like for an
adult in the beginning of their democratic schooling experience)
Thanks for listening,
angela
