The way this is accomplished at SVS is that everyone has the opportunity to
sit on both sides of the J.C. table, as it were. Kids who may have been on
the receiving end of a sentence for violating a rule will eventually find
themselves sitting on the J.C when their turn comes up. Everyone (not just
students) gets the experience off hearing complaints against other community
members. Everyone gets the experience of determining whether alleged
violations have any merit and determining what would constitute a fair
I think the lessons learned from this type of inclusion are fundamental to
learning how to exist in a community where justice is based on the rule of
law, determined by a jury of one's peers.
