ahem,

but it would be a mistake to judge a broad phrase like socialism by
the blind realizations of these countries. these countries were not
socialist. they were a more centralized, more developed form of
capitalism. what came to be known by their critics as state capitalism.
national governments have not been prepared for the implications of
getting rid of capitalism. lenin, stalin, mao and castro have been
mainly interested in holding power. your inevitable suicide is linked
to despotism not socialism.
